NY Times and the Memory Hole
From reddit.com, this was an interesting thread following a post to nytimes.com under the title “Wonder what’s the reason behing Cheney’s visit to Iraq? Read the first 4 lines.”:
Nomikos: Can someone pls copy/paste them in a comment for those unsubscribed to the NYT?
je255j: Sure. http://www.bugmenot.com/view/www.nytimes.com
Or is that not what you meant? ![]()
Seriously though, the sentence referenced is:
“Vice President Dick Cheney made an unannounced trip Monday to Baghdad, where he plans to push Iraqi political leaders toward opening the country’s vast oil fields to international companies, a senior Bush administration official said.”
recursive: They changed the article. That’s not there anymore.
je255j: Wow. Damn. They did. Now I wish I had copied the whole thing.
And what, might you ask, was the article changed to?
Let’s take a look at the headline: BAGHDAD — A female suicide bomber penetrated one of the most secure perimeters in Iraq Monday evening and killed at least 42 people near the Imam Hussein shrine in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, according to the Iraqi authorities.
In fact, you’ll see that oil is no longer even mentioned… that was a quick change. Thankfully, it’s hard to disappear completely on the Internet.
Running a google search on the first headline, out of eight hits, one stands out as having copied and pasted the article in question: knoxviews.com
And they wonder why we don’t trust the media.
